Lean and simple cloud storage alternative, simpleDrive

Android App

To access files stored in simpleDrive on the road, you can install the simpleDrive app for Android [6] on your smartphone (Figure 3). This lets you transfer data between your phone and your cloud storage. The app also acts as a screensaver and MP3 audio player for data stored in the cloud. When you set up the app, you need to enter the path to your simpleDrive installation along with the protocol http:// or https://; otherwise, the simpleDrive app will output an error message whenever you try to connect.

Conclusions

In terms of feature scope, simpleDrive can't compete with major league tools like ownCloud: It neither encrypts, supports protocols like CalDAV or CardDAV, nor offers a desktop client to sync data between a computer and the cloud. However, it does support WebDAV, so the lack of a client is a minor loss.

That said, a strict focus on the essentials can be a boon: SimpleDrive is fast in the browser and even lets you edit text and ODT documents, although not collaboratively. At the end of the day, simpleDrive is a very useful, lean, DIY online storage option.
