64 Bit Version of Univention Corporate Server 2.1

The Univention Corporate Server (UCS) update to version 2.1 includes a new kernel and support for 64 bit x86 architectures.

The Univention Corporate Server, which is based on Debian, now offers kernel 2.6.24 as an installation option. Univention has integrated the updates released by Debian July 26.

The network-capable Bacula backup solution is also new. The company is planning to replace its own Unidump solution with the Open Source Bacula software in future releases. The vendor has also added thin client infrastructure components which you can use to add and manage scanners and USB devices. Univention also promises an enhanced Active Directory connector and a Groupware client.

Univention is sticking to its guns on the desktop front, and has opted for KDE 3.5.9, preferring to avoid the new KDE 4.1 as the jump is just too big for an intermediate release, says CEO Peter Ganten. KDE 4 will be introduced with UCS 3.0.
