Breakthrough in Sync Support: SyncML Client Under GPL

The Swiss company Synthesis AG, which specializes in synchronizing PCs and mobile Linux devices, has released its SyncML Client library source code to the community under GPL.

Lukas Zeller of Synthesis AG posted the announcement of the SyncML Data Synchronization Engine May 13 in lwn.net mail. As of then, the source code for the client library (libsynthesis) will be available under GPLv2 or GPLv3 and the company hopes for developer community input. Independent of the free source code, the Swiss firm will continue to support its commercial SyncML products for Windows Mobile, PalmOS and the iPhone. To prevent a fork between the free and commercial versions, Synthesis asks potential contributors to enter a Sun Contributor Agreement with the company.

The Moblin project already uses the libsynthesis library in its own SyncEvolution tool and will continue future integration efforts. New libsynthesis releases will thus be available not only from Synthesis, but also through Moblin.org downloads. Synchronization with mobile devices is a key factor of the Moblin project.
