Clonezilla makes backing up and restoring your system an easy affair that only involves a few key strokes. A homegrown solution reduces the time and effort to the act of slotting in a CD, on which you previously burned a Perl script.

I have to admit that there is still a computer with Windows 7 in my household; my wife uses it to do our tax returns and mess about with digital images using Photoshop. Windows 7’s built-in backup program was the obvious choice for backing up the PC. But when this tool refused to restore the backed up data at some point, pelting me with cryptic error messages and not allowing me to troubleshoot behind the familiar closed source iron curtain, the decision finally went in favor of a handknit Linux solution.
