Nokia Siemens joins Linux Foundation

Aug 07, 2007

The Linux Foundation continues to grow. The latest member to join is the telecommunications supplier Nokia Siemens Networks.

The Nokia and Siemens joint venture is interested in contributing its know-how to interface development in the field of Carrier Grade Linux (CGL), and to improving interoperability between various Linux distributions. One aim is that of synchronizing the CGL specification with the Linux Standard Base. To this end Nokia Siemens Networks will be contributing funds as well as technical resources.

Nokia itself joined the Linux Foundation in April. This, and Nokia's Linux-based Internet tablets, N770 and N800, all go to show that the Fins are firmly on a course to adopting the free operating system. Nokia also opened its Symbian S60 smartphone platform for code in April.

However, the Finnish company is not only interested in cooperating with Open Source and Linux. Just yesterday, Nokia and Microsoft announced that they will be collaborating in the field of mobile entertainment in future. The phone manufacturer will be integrating Microsoft's Playready copy protection software in its S60 platform for this purpose.
