The Scientific Linux enterprise platform is available in version 4.8. Next to those from the upstream, downloads can be single packages.
With the release of 4.8 Scientific Linux (SL) now matches the software status of RHEL 4.8, from whose freely licensed source RPMs it emerged.
The Fermilab and CERN research facilities put together the release by replacing the Pine mail client with Alpine 2.00 and upgrading to the OpenAFS 1.4.7 network filesystem. New packages in 4.8 include the Squashfs 3.1.2 compressed read-only filesystem and the Unionfs 1.1.15 transparent filesystem that unifies multiple source trees.
Details can be found in the release notes. SL 4.8 and the source RPMs are ready for download for 32-bit and 64-bit Intel CPUs.
