After some stops and starts, the first release candidate for Open Office 3.0 is finally ready; after some discussions the project team decided today to go for a second try.
Release candidate 1 is already available on some mirrors and a download link is to be found on the project homepage. This test release is made available to allow a broad user base to test and evaluate the next major version of OpenOffice.org, but is not recommended for production use at this stage.
The publication brings the project another step towards completion and whereas September has been quoted as a deadline for the final release, October seems now a more likely possibility.
Project member Florian Effenberger says the download version will already have a new splashscreen, another major change is the way the software handles extensions.
