Linux Plumbers Conference Officially Begins

Sep 17, 2008

Greg Kroah-Hartman, author of Linux Kernel In A Nutshell and co-author of Linux Device Drivers, gave today's keynote address at the official opening of the first Linux Plumbers Conference in Portland, Oregon.

Kroah-Hartman is part of the stable kernel release team and maintains several portions of the kernel, including USB and sysfs. His talk, "The Linux Ecosystem: What It Is, Where You Are In It," was a concise and direct portrait of the development cycle as it relates to the greater Linux community.
He summarized the past three years of kernel development (99,324 patches) and talked about the importance of contributing to the development process. "Companies who rely on Linux must contribute, or they are at the whim of others," he said.
Kroah-Hartman's address was very interactive and he invited questions throughout the presentation. He gave an early indication that the Linux Plumbers Conference will invite more audience participation than would be expected during a typical conference.
