Sabayon 4.0: Italian Sweet for the Holidays

Dec 30, 2008

The Sabayon project has released its version 4.0 of the multimedia friendly Gentoo derivative just in time for the Holidays and calls it the "next big thing."

Among the key changes to Sabayon 4.0 belong the conversion to the GNU C Compiler (GCC) version 4.3 and the i586 architecture to i686 for 32-bit systems. These two changes and further enhancements should make the current version 25% faster to boot and 15% faster to operate than its predecessor.

As is customary with Sabayon, the release also brings with it a number of proprietary programs that, next to the classic 3D drivers from ATI/AMD and NVIDIA, include Google Earth, Picasa and Flash Player 10. Its standard desktop environments include KDE 3.5.10 and GNOME 2.24.2, although KDE 4.1.3 is available in advanced mode and numerous other desktop apps are in the Sabayon repositories.

Sabayon developers also reworked the Entropy Package Manager (to 0.24.6), while keeping the distro fully compatible with Portage 2.2.

Downloads of Sabayon 4.0 are torrents or ISOs over one of many mirror sites. And whoever didn't have enough sweets yet could try the other variant of Sabayon, the Italian dessert, here's a recipe.
