Sun and IBM Initiate OpenDocument Project

Nov 06, 2008

Sun Microsystems and IBM have kicked off an open source community project dealing with conversion of documents into OpenDocument Format (ODF).

Sun and IBM have pretty much revealed their intent by giving their joint project the name OpenDocument Format Toolkit Union. The ODF Toolkit
uses initial Sun code contributions to provide developers an API next to tools that generate ODF documents and with which they can program further
applications supporting ODF.

ODF Toolkit structure: diverse tools and programming help

One part of Sun's contribution is the ODF Validator that checks files for conformance with the ODF specification. The ODF Toolkit webpage has further details. The two collaborators are hoping for active participation and new
applications and solutions in the content management and documentation workflow arenas, among others.
