The virtualization specialist adopted the know-how for the product through its acquisition of Trango Virtual Processors. VMware predicts that the coupling of hardware and applications in one thin software layers means handset manufacturers can produce their devices more quickly. For users, the benefit would be combining private and business usage as separate personalities into one handset, thereby reducing the need for multiple devices.
VMware MVP itself supports among other operating systems Windows CE 5.0 and 6.0, Linux 2.6.x, Symbian 9.x, eCos, µITRON NORTi and µC/OS-II.
According to Gartner Group's Monica Basso, VMware seems to have hit the mark with its product, calling it a "very promising and potentially fast emerging market." She predicts that more than half the smart phones shipped in 2012 will be virtualized.
