Debian 3.1: Update No. 8 and Goodbye

The Debian project has just announced the end of support for the “oldstable” version Debian 3.1, alias Sarge parallel to the release of the update number 8.

The update mainly sees the developer team fix a number of minor bugs, but it also removes one critical vulnerability.

Users are also informed that it is not worth ditching their previous installation media for Debian 3.1r8. The update comprises of just a couple of packages and is easily installable across the Web. The changelog lists the details. Debian advises users to run the Aptitude package management tool to complete the update. Debian 3.1 was replaced almost exactly a year ago by Debian 4.0 (Etch). The next generation of Debian, codenamed Lenny is due to appear in September.
