3G for Moblin 2.1

The Moblin project has released version 2.1 of its Linux system optimized for Intel Atom processors. It provides countless detailed changes and new features.

According to the announcement from Imad Sousou, director of Intel's Open Source Technology Center, the current release incorporates many bugfixes based on feedback from users and the developer community. The browser was first among important changes that included extended plugin support and a new graphical interface that scales well to nettops with higher screen resolutions.

Trendy: the integrated Firefox shows favicons on startup.

Other new features include support for Ericsson 3G modems (with other such modems to follow) and a modified ConnMan connection manager that also supports 3G. All mobile browsing limitations have thus been eliminated.

Also newly integrated in Moblin is the Application Installer that draws applications from the Moblin Garage. With an upgrade to Clutter 1.0, animations have undergone quite some improvement, although multitouch support is still missing in the current release.

Moblin also incorporates instant messaging improvements and new localizations. A community translation project goes further by supporting languages not yet officially part of Moblin.

Apart from Clutter 1.0, developers have added a few components to the Linux system, among them Kernel 2.6.31, X Server 1.6.4 and Mesa 7.6.

Moblin 2.1 is available for download as images from Linux kernel mirrors.
