AMD Goes Open Source with APL

AMD has released its AMD Performance Library (APL) under the Apache License 2.0 as the Open Source Framewave project.

According to AMD the library not only handles arithmetic operations but provides optimized image and signal handling. This will developers the ability to eke more performance out of multiple core and multiple CPU systems. The library’s properties are particularly useful for media player software, codecs, image manipulation, audio applications and streaming says AMD.

AMD’s motivation for going Open Source is to optimize the software by giving partners, customers and the community the ability to contribute. In addition to this, AMD is looking to extend the library’s functionality by letting contributors implement features that reflect their own needs. To support this objective AMD says that it will support developers by continuing to work on developing the library. The project homepage also has setup how-tos for build systems.

AMD opted for the Apache License 2.0. Version 1.0 of the Framewave library is available from Sourceforge.net as a zipped tar archive with or without source code for the Linux, Solaris, Mac OS and Windows platforms.
