Centos 5.1 now with Network Install

Centos, a distribution based on the GPL’d sources of Red Hat Linux is following in its role model’s footsteps and has just gone to version 5.1.

Writing on the Centos-Announce mailing list, Karanbir Singh says that the major changes relate to standardization of upstream repositories. This will make package management easier for end users. Users can now bind external repositories when installing Centos, and this is the first time that the Centos developers have offered the free RHEL as an ISO image for network installation.

Centos (Community Enterprise Operating System) comprises the GPL’d parts of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. RHEL packages can be used directly by Centos (binary compatibility).

The new version of Centos 5.1 follows the version change to the upstream distribution, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), version 5.1 of which was recently released. Details of the changes to Centos 5.1 are available in the release notes. Centos 5.1 currently supports the i386 and x86_64 platforms with Power PC, Sparc and 64 bit Itanium (IA-64) to follow at an undisclosed future date. After downloading, the developers advise users to verify the MD5 or SHA1 checksum of the CD image. An FAQ and documentation is available on the project website.
