Italian firm Endian has completed work on a Linux-based firewall software product in version 2.3. The Community edition of the Endian Firewall (EFW) includes features that were previously available for paying customers only.
The features to Endian Firewall Community 2.3 include a new dashboard to replace the main page that provides statistics on system traffic. The product also underwent some fundamental changes underneath: version 2.3 makes it possible to create VLANs on every interface (IEEE 802.1q trunking) and traffic shaping was replaced by a completely new quality of service (QoS) module.
New time-based access control lists (ACLs) were also added for HTTP proxy, as was content filtering for users and groups. Backups can now go to, and be restored from, USB media, Snort intrusion prevention rules are configurable, and basic SNMP support was added. Further details are in the product announcement and change log.
Endian Firewall Community 2.3 is under GPL for free download. The firm also updated its firewall appliances, as described in its feature overview.
