Gran Canaria Desktop Summit Review: Video of Plasma Netbook UI and Qt KDE Lab in South America

The KDE team are to work closer with Kwin developers to reinforce the integration of the KDE window manager into the project. The announcement was made at the end of the joint Gnome and KDE Gran Canaria Desktop Summit that came to a close July 11.

After a recent initial presentation, the summit saw the unveiling of a first running version. The Alpha should appear towards the end of 2009 with a stable version planned for early 2010. A screencast video showing the future KDE netbook interface in detail is available on YouTube and its clear KDE is headed for the web and the integration of more online services. In the last days of the Canary event, the Plasma team conjured a KRunner plugin out of its sleeve that brings Wikipedia to the desktop- a feature that, thanks to the modular design of Plasma, will also run on normal desktops.

Newly elected President Cornelius Schumacher, last year's treasurer, told of KDEs bright blossoming financial situation with the result that new projects are being created and existing ones further developed. The desktop is constantly increasing its profile in the economy, sponsoring 18 developer conferences, the so-called Developer Sprints, last year alone. Something that the French University of Toulouse has been doing for the past three years.

The flirt between KDE and Gitorious also has a happy end. KDE today announced a move to future cooperation with git and Gitorius, paving the way for more developer contribution.
