LongTail Video Announces the JW Player Beta for HTML5

The popular video player comes to HTML5.

LongTail Video released the JW Player beta for HTML5. The open source player allows video content to be displayed using the <video> tag found in HTML5. This feature allows video to be decoded by the end user's video codec rather than a browser-based plugin.

The JW Player for HTML5 supports custom skins to fit a site's specific look and is fully compatible with the JW Flash Player. If a browser (IE 6, we're looking at you) is incompatible with HTML5, the player reverts back to Flash.

One issue that has hampered the adoption of HTML5 by commercial sites such as Hulu, is the lack of ad support, a caption system, and playlist functionality. Jeroen Wijering, the JW Player creator hopes to build out these features with the help of the developer community.

The JW Player for HTML5 is in beta testing now and can be downloaded here.
