Mozilla Messaging Launched

The Mozilla Foundation today launched a new company, Mozilla Messaging Inc., which will be focusing on Internet based communications.

The foundation’s new offspring will be promoting the development of Thunderbird 3, a new version of the Thunderbird email client. The new Thunderbird is expected to take off in late 2008. According to David Ascher, the new company’s CEO, the new email client will have a calendar, improved search tools and improved overall performance.

Mozilla Messaging will not just be focusing on Thunderbird 3, but also on other news and communications platforms, although the press release does not disclose which they will be.

In the company’s FAQ Ascher says that he has looked into the market requirements in the past few weeks and gathered engineers who are familiar with the Mozilla platform. In his blog, Ascher also reveals his vision for the future of the company. He emphasizes that the development of Thunderbird 3 depends on numerous suppliers, and regards the extensibility of the platform in particular as a major advantage on which the company will be concentrating.
