New Lease on Life for Linux Veteran

Slackware is widely regarded as the oldest active Linux distributions. Right on time for Christmas, the distro, which once served as a basis for (open) SUSE, is available in a new version.

Developers see this latest release as an interim step on the way to Version 13.0. This leads to conjecture that the integration of the weighty KDE 4 and renewal of X.org will be neglected.

Instead, says Patrick Volkerding, chief developer, Slackware will concentrate on security, stability, and reverse compatibility. On board the 12.2 version is the 2.6.27.7 kernel, XFCE 4.4.3, and KDE 3.5.10. The ca. 4GB DVD installation image can be downloaded at www.slackware.com. Alternatively, the project can be supported by purchasing a DVD.
