Off and Running: Symbian Security Package Becomes Open Source

The Symbian Foundation, established under a Nokia initiative, has released the first part of its Symbian Platform Security package under the free Eclipse Public License (EPL).

With the release of its Security package, a milestone was reached, says Symbian developer Craig Heath in the Symbian Foundation Security blog. The software used to be released under the foundation's own license (SFL). Nokia had taken over Symbian at the end of 2008 and gave birth to the foundation along with a few other industry giants.

Heath mentions a few reasons behind the move. One reason is Great Britain, where the foundation is located, doesn't allow exportation of encryption technologies, with one exception: open source software. Another reason is the combination of open and secure. Heath's blog post includes links to the code and further details.
