Oracle and IBM Team to Support OpenJDK

Companies hope to grow open Java community.

Tech giants IBM and Oracle are collaborating on the OpenJDK open Java platform in hopes of enticing additional participation within the community. With the announcement the companies are effectively focusing all open source Java SE development on the OpenJDK community. Both Oracle and IBM will continue to use and enhance the Java Community Process.

In addition to OpenJDK, the collaboration will focus on Java SE, the Java Language, the JDK and the Java Runtime Environment.

"IBM, Oracle and other members of the Java community working collaboratively in OpenJDK will accelerate the innovation in the Java platform," said Rod Smith, vice president, emerging technologies, IBM.

Exactly how IBM and Oracle will go about encouraging growth within the platform is a detail IBM somehow managed to omit from their press release. We'll update the story when we know more.
