Samsung Drops Symbian

Oct 04, 2010

Another one bites the dust.

Recently we wrote about Sony-Ericsson abandoning the Symbian mobile phone platform in favor of Google's Android. Now, another major OEM has dropped the platform in favor Android, Bada, and Windows Phone 7.

With Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and even Nokia dropping support either partially in Nokia's case or completely in the Sony Ericsson and Samsung's case, the open source OS has a pretty shaky future. Currently, Symbian powers a huge number of dumbphones and many of the phones in Europe. It is currently the most popular mobile OS with 300,000 daily activations.
