Trolltech to release Qt under GPLv3

As part of the KDE 4.0 release event, Trolltech CEO, Haavard Nord, announced that the Qt library would be released under GPLv3. Qt is an important framework for the KDE Linux desktop system.

In his contribution, Nord outlined the symbiotic relationship that exists between his company and the free project. He also touched on the concerns raised by critics of the new licensing model. Referring to 11 years of good mutual cooperation, the company chief stated that mutual trust had formed the basis for their success. He went on to explain that the entire Qt framework, which Trolltech had previously distributed under GPLv2 or an alternative, proprietary license, would from that point also be available as an option under the latest version of the license maintained by the Free Software Foundation. FSF-founder Richard M. Stallman issued a statement welcoming the step taken by the Norwegian software developer.
