Issue #145

Knoppix 7.0.4

Article from Issue 145/2012

The latest Knoppix Live Linux DVD is based on Debian stable (squeeze) with newer desktop packages from Debian/ testing and Debian/ unstable (wheezy). Current computer hardware is supported by kernel 3.4.9 and Xorg 7.7 (core 1.12.3), and the Apt database now contains all data necessary to install software directly via Synaptic.

On this month’s disc, you’ll find a complete selection of applications, including LibreOffice 3.5.4 and the Chromium 21 and Iceweasel 10 web browsers. Knoppix 7.0.4 features the LXDE desktop by default with file manager PCManFM 1.0, or you can boot to KDE 4.7.4 or Gnome 3.4. The new Knoppix supports exFATFUSE and OProfile, a system profiler; additionally, gprsconnect and modemlink have been repaired. An optional 64-bit kernel supports systems with more than 4GB of RAM, as well as chroot to 64-bit installations for system rescue. zRam compression will compress up to 75% of main memory, so large programs do not need to use swap space, and the system can use up to twice as much “virtual” RAM.
