Red Hat Makes SPICE Open Source
With the Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environments (SPICE), Red Hat has put one of the components of its desktop virtualization under GPL and BSD licensing.
By open-sourcing SPICE, Red Hat has its virtualization products in mind, among them Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Desktops that is currently in beta. Developers and partners are thus encouraged to promote SPICE in a broader sense. The SPICE remote computing protocol was inherited through Red Hat's 2008 takeover of Qumranet and is to contribute better performance for virtual systems in that it carries out automatic tuning of specific graphics and networking environments for the virtual desktop.
