4.0r1: First Update for Debian Etch

Right on time to celebrate the project's 14th birthday, Debian developers gave themselves a big present – the first Point Release for Debian Etch 4.0.

Debian 4.0r1 not only includes security updates, but also fixes for bugs that appeared late in the release process that the project was unable to resolve prior to the release. An announcement by the project reveals which packages are affected.

The updates relate to the kernel used by the installer, the list of mirror servers, and support for various USB CD drives, which the installer obviously fails to detect or identifies incorrectly. A modification to Gksu additionally gives users the ability to run systems properly without using the root account.

The project also points out to users that there is no need to throw away their installation media: all you need to do is to install the updates over the Internet. The page also includes a link to a list of FTP servers.
