This year's release of version 1.0 of the free runtime environment Wine is a milestone in itself. Developer Maarten Lankhorst has set another (experimental) stepping stone by getting the first 64Bit Windows program to run.
Lankhorst tells of the "first ever" start of a Windows 64Bit program under Linux, even if it is just a "Hello World" application. His thanks go to Kai Tietz, who was responsible for the extensive changes in the GCC.
A few of the hacks are still far from the mainline, writes Lankhorst, and despite his compiling a repository, it will take a number of patches and some subversion to get it to run properly. His advice is to not even try an installation. Yet.
