Linux Foundation Announces Linux Developer Network beta

On August 7, Brian Proffitt, former Managing Editor of Linux Today and the new LDN Community Manager, announced the beta release of the Linux Foundation's Linux Developer Network.

In an interview with Linux Pro Magazine, Proffitt said that the Linux Developer Network site is intended to be a central repository of knowledge and tools for developers. Currently, the focus is on application development, but the network should soon grow to include development in other areas, such as cloud, kernel, and embedded Linux systems. Proffitt says that the goal is for the site to become, "... a – if not the – place for Linux development."

The "nifty component," according to Proffitt, is the Linux Application Checker. Proffitt says that the AppChecker, which is still in beta but usable now, gives developers web-based reporting with specific feedback about what you need to do to make your application portable. The AppChecker is available for download on the Linux Developer Network site.

Although Proffitt has only been in his new community manager role for LDN for about three weeks, he says the transition is going well. He added, "It's good to be acting in the community instead of just observing."
