Mozilla Releases Fennec Alpha for Android and Nokia N900

The mobile Firefox browser offers add-ons and Firefox Sync support.

The Mozilla Project announced the alpha release of Fennec, the mobile version of their popular Firefox browser, for Android smartphones and the Nokia N900.

Fennec sets itself apart from other mobile browsers by supporting add-ons and Firefox Sync, which synchronizes bookmarks, tabs, history, auto-fill information, and favorites across multiple Firefox browsers. The Fennec browser also supports current and emerging Web standards such as HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript.

The Fennec browser also supports features like Save to PDF, location-based services, find-in-page, and the Awesome Screen.

"The main focus of this release is to increase performance and responsiveness to user actions," said Stuart Parmenter via Mozilla's official blog.

Mozilla has already identified a few issues with Fennec. The first and most notable is graphics performance, which results in some delay and even flickering when scrolling, zooming, and playing video. Moving Fennec to the Android platform has caused several add-ons to break as well. Just to rub it in, Mozilla optimized Fennec for the no longer available, Nexus One. Oh, it burns.

Cool but not the best for the phone

Bruno Aug 28, 2010 12:55am GMT

I have just tried it on my N900. It is neat to have Firefox on a phone, but the speed is not there yet. The standard browser (MicroB) is also based on Firefox and it is much faster. The zoom in particular is not usable on Fennec.
