New Protech Linux Distribution Released

The first stable version of the new Protech Linux distribution, which includes various security tools, has just been released.

The developers, who released a beta version in February, today released a fully reworked stable version with a new look for downloading. Is based on Ubuntu Linux and is designed for security specialists and programmers according to its inventors. According to the distribution website, the operating system is particularly user friendly and stable.

Users can boot Protech directly from the storage medium as a live distribution, and install if needed: according to the makers, this takes just a "couple of minutes". The integrated package manager helps users to install additional software packages with just two mouse clicks. The programmers opted for Ubuntu because the system offers a wide spectrum of hardware support.

One of the special features Protech Linux offers is that it includes a version of the Opera Web browser which is pre-configured with the Tor network software and the Privoxy Web proxy. Tor anonymizes TCP connections and Privoxy supports filters to protect the user's privacy and access control functions.

One of the distribution's new features is the Synaptic Package Manager; the developers say that the final version has additional multimedia functionality compared to the beta, along with enhanced wireless card support, and advanced printer and scanner support. Besides a number of bugfixes, the developers have also updated various software packages including the kernel.

Links to a download of the first stable version of Protech are available on the Techm4sters website, where you will also find a list of software packages.
