Small Quad-Core Server by Sun

Sun Microsystems has just announced ist new Sun Fire X4150 and X4450 64 bit servers based on Intel's Xeon quad core CPU.

The Sun Fire X4450 has four sockets on two height units, which the manufacturer describes as "industry's smallest enterprise class 4-socket x64 server". Xeon 7300 processors are used in the four sockets.

The X4150 has two sockets and relies on the Xeon 5300; it can support up to 64GB RAM and offers a disk capacity of about 1TB on a single height board.

The devices are multi-platform capable: Sun names Solaris, Windows, Linux, and VMware. Sun quotes a price of 2500 euros for the smallest X4150 configuration, which is already available. The Sun Fire X4450 will be available as of October at a price of around US$ 8900 for the entry model.
