During CeBIT 2011 open source projects such as Navit, on-Board open source navigation software, will have the opportunity to showcase what is currently in active development.
Short and sweet: How would you describe your project in one or two sentences?
Navit is a on-Board open source navigation software which is flexible in itsconfiguration and available for various plattforms. Apart from OpenStreetMap it is possible to use a few standard map formats and also commerial maps.
When did the project begin?
The first publishment was in december 2005, but the project existed privately already for about 3 years.
How many active members does the project have?
It depends how "Active" is defined. There are about 30 developers registered, approximately 5-10 are contributing regularily. Additionally there about 10 non-developer which are giving support to users.
Why was the project created?
From the wish to also have navigation on a Car-PC which was originally intended as MP3 player
Why should a CeBIT visitor come to your booth?
To learn what is possible with free navigation software together with free maps(OpenStreetMap)
Who do you make your software for?
For interested endusers as well as for companies which are looking for a freenavigation solution
Where do you see your biggest current challenges?
To improve the user guidance and installation of Navit so also persons without any additional knowledge can use navit
If you could hire a full-time project developer now, what problem should he or she be ready to solve?
To improve the map rendering so it will have an attractive picture in all resolutions.
Under which license is the software currently offered?
Navit is licensed under GPLv2 (GNU General Public License)
Both projects help organizations build their own containerized systems.
