Dell Renews Recall of Risky Notebook Batteries

The computer manufacturer Dell has announced a further recall of potentially dangerous notebook batteries. The recall of the Sony built batteries began in 2006.

According to Dell, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission informed them of the continued risk. "Under rare conditions, it is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could pose a risk of fire." says Dell. Sony has implied that worldwide up to 300 defective batteries, built by Sony between November 2004 and April 2005, could still be in circulation.

Dell's Latitude and Inspiron notebooks would seem to be most at risk, with some of the batteries being shipped as secondary replacements.

The Dell Battery Return Program website, gives information on identifying the faulty batteries and a detailed list of affected notebooks. Customers who checked their batteries at the last recall are urged to check again. Dell will provide free replacement batteries for those returned.
