Mozilla developers have released a status report on the web synchronization service Weave.
On the newly formed Mozilla Labs web site, Ragavan Srinivasan of the Weave team describes the state of development shortly before version 0.6. The report places emphasis on usability, especially in the area of first starts.
The team is working on various methods to provide a performant initial synchronization. One method is to load a data-skeleton first, and then collect remaining data. Another follows a list of priorities.
As a Firefox add-on, Weave can synchronize a whole list of services, including under Bookmarks, personal preferences and tabs to create the user's usual working environment on different systems. The add-on is also compatible with the mobile browser Fennec.
Weave's synchronization capabilities are kept on Mozilla servers but can also be integrated into owned servers. With Alpha 0.5.1. the current version, Ragavan Srinivasan looks optimistically towards version 0.6. Read more about Weave in a Linux Magazine article from issue 104, published here.
