Linux users have an array of open source gaming options at their fingertips. We take a look at five first-person shooters that really stand out.

Linux users often lament that they don't have as many gaming options under Linux as they do on other platforms. I submit that many of these folks are missing some amazing open source Linux games right under their noses. SourceForge.net hosts nearly 1,600 games and gaming-related projects, which means quite a few choices are actually available. In fact, while writing this article, I had to hold back in identifying only five among the many games I really enjoy.

Many facets of open source gaming make it far superior to its closed commercial alternatives:

  • Ability to add features and request improvements directly: You are the community, and you can participate on many levels as a gamer, developer, mapper, musician, and so on.
  • Truly community driven: Many open source game communities are obsessed and motivated to improve the game. Trust me, you will be hard pressed to find people as dedicated to the art and science of gaming.
  • Rich community contributions: Maps, music, and other in-game assets mean tons of maps and mods. This translates to never being bored with the current game for lack of levels or game modifications.
  • No monthly fees or in-game costs: You don't need for pay per play or for in-game options. Please consider donating some of those savings to the project of your choice.
  • Runs on most hardware: Many newer games will not run on older hardware, but this is not the case in most open source first-person shooters (FPSs). If you are like me, some of your machines are not the latest and greatest, but with open source, you still are in the game.
