This month we explore Zenclora OS 2.0, MocaccinoOS 26.03, NebiOS 10.2, and CachyOS 260308.
As I was browsing DistroWatch this month, I noted that the only version listed for the Debian-based Zenclora OS was 2.2. After checking the developer's website, I learned there had been a version 1.0 and, indeed, version 2.0 earlier this year. The numbering in this case simply spoke to the version DistroWatch is currently tracking. Perhaps it's just human nature to see meaning in numbers where none exists.
For instance, I was also recently poring over the release notes for Gnome 50. I was eagerly anticipating some truly monumental upgrades for such an auspicious version number. Yet, most of the changes are under the hood and/or unremarkable. For instance, dropping support for X11 and fully embracing Wayland has been on the developers' roadmap for years. Linus Torvalds even noted this phenomenon in the release notes for version 7.0-rc4 of the Linux kernel [1]:
"On Friday everybody else decided to send in their work for the week, with a few more trickling in over the weekend…. I'm starting to suspect it's the psychological result of 'hey, new major number', and people are just being a bit more active as a result."
