Free Nano: First Breakthrough for Linux on iPod
The iPodLinux has had success being installed on older iPods already. Now the current iPods should enjoy the taste of Linux.
The iPodLinux project and Rockbox are two projects that have already successfully ported Apple's popular media player to Linux. The newer iPod devices have posed a problem, however, in that Apple protected its Nano 2G firmware through encryption.
The iPod Nano Linux project founded in 2007 wants to overcome this hurdle and bring Linux to the newest Apple devices. The first big success could come the beginning of July. Developers came upon an exploitable bug in the Nano firmware back in February in which they're now injecting ARM assembly code, with some notable success.
The open source venture is now poised to make its code available to the Rockbox and iPodLinux projects.
