From Mac to Linux: A Musician Convert

The Mac is fairly widespread among musicians because tons of professional programs run on it. Apparently Ubuntu can completely replace the Mac, however, as in the following story.

Kim Cascone earned his bread from digital soundtracks, up to quite recently with Apple hardware and Mac OS X. For cost and performance reasons he made the switch to Ubuntu and is surprised at how good the audio processing is on reasonable priced hardware.

Now Peter Kirn has captured Cascone's conversion story on createdigitalmusic.com. Interesting about the article is not only the facts of Cascone's conversion, but the comments accompanying it that contain numerous tips and information on sound processing under Linux. For example, Cascone recommends dropping all the alternative sound systems and using ALSA and JACK together with a real-time kernel.
