Nvidia: Bug Warning for Linux Driver 180.29
Nvidia's proprietary graphic driver 180.29 can, under certain conditions, turn your Fujitsu Celsius H270 notebook into a brick.
Nvidia manager Andy Ritger writes on the nV News Forum: "Please note that the NVIDIA 180.51 Linux graphics driver fixed an interaction problem that resulted in corruption of the internal flatpanel's EDID:" The Extended Display Identification Data is the structure provided by a computer display that describes its capabilities to a graphics card, e.g., manufacturer information or the size of display.
The Nvidia driver overwrites this information, leaving behind a pile of trashed data that stays put even after a re-boot. The inbuilt BIOS is unable to recognize the display which causes the system to crash. Even with an external display, the PC will refuse to start the operating system.
Affected users should contact Fujitsu's technical support. Other Celsius H270 owners should update to 180.51 or newer as soon as possible. Here the bug has been fixed, just as in the 185.19 beta version.
