Ubuntu Server Survey 2010 Results
Ubuntu maker Canonical issued a survey on Ubuntu servers to the community and is now releasing the results.
Gerry Carr, Canonical's head of platform marketing, announced the survey in his blog. At the end of 2009, nearly 3,000 in the Ubuntu community sent back responses to it.
A short version of the Ubuntu Server Survey 2010 results is downloadable as PDF. A more extensive version for internal use and Ubuntu partners is also available.
The public report makes clear that Ubuntu server users prefer the Long Term Support (LTS) versions over any other. About two-thirds of the respondents alone used Ubuntu Server Edition 8.04 LTS, with the newer non-LTS versions gaining in popularity, perhaps as a consequence. The newest 9.10 LTS version came out April of 2008. Canonical also focused part of its questions on interest in cloud computing, which got some recognition through the Ubuntu 9.10 Enterprise Cloud (UEC) based on the free Eucalyptus cloud management framework. 54% of the respondents admitted to using the cloud in some form.
