New features in Gimp 3

Conclusion

During testing, I found Gimp 3.0 to run smoothly without any notable problems. I'm not surprised that it's quickly becoming the default in the major distros. That's no mean feat for a major version release, and I find myself wanting to forgive the team for the long delay between releases.

The only downside of switching to Gimp 3.0 that I can see is that it is a bit more demanding on hardware. This might be worth considering for a resource-constrained system such as an older Raspberry Pi or an old laptop. Where there are areas that still don't use non-destructive editing, hopefully they will be covered in a later release.

Overall, it's a fantastic update for regular Gimp users that I heartily recommend. Due to the improvements that have taken place under the surface, I'm looking forward to even more updates in the near future.

The Author

Little did Michael Reed know where purchasing those "Winter 1996" Linux CD-ROMs would lead. He's been knocking about in computer publications since the mid-2000s. In his spare time, he's out on his bicycle, doing some DIY, dancing in clubs, and singing and guitar slinging, though not all at once.
