HP Reveals Server with Intel's Quad-Core Processor
HP is offering a rack server and a blade server with Intel's new quad-core processor.
The DL580 G5 rack server, which is part of HP's Proliant line, and the BL680c G5 blade server from HP's Bladesystem series, both feature four sockets for Intel 7300 series quad-core processors. The rack server costs US$ 9219, and the blade server US$ 9669.
HP refers to the systems' large memory capacities, but without actually saying what customers can expect for the prices quoted here. The servers include two software tools for enhanced virtualization and power saving functionality: the HP Insight Power Manager gives administrators the ability to restrict power consumption to a specified level, and thus to increase the number of servers that can be deployed in a rack. The HP Virtual Machine Management Pack (VMM) is designed for central management of the physical and virtual machines thus avoiding the need for external handling.
Sun and IBM have both announced servers with Intel's new quad-core technology. Sun points to the low height of 2 HUs and the capabilities of the Solaris operating system, whereas IBM emphasizes its new chipset.
