Linux Moves Ahead in Smartphone Markets
New studies have shown Windows Mobile to have around a 10% share of the smartphone market. Now Samsung wants to migrate its phones to a Linux system.
As one of the last major telephone manufacturers, Samsung will now also develop its own operating system for smartphones. According to an article from Unwiredview.com, the OS is based on a Linux kernel and will incorporate the familiar Touch/Wiz interface. The author sees in the move the corrosion of the last sizable market segment for Windows Mobile, and pronounces Windows Mobile for dead.
Fact is, Windows has taken a substantial slip in position due to Blackberry, the iPhone and Android and a current study from Canalys shows Windows hanging on to a meager ten percent of the smartphone market. In comparison, there is hardly a mobile producer left that doesn't have a Linux system in the portfolio. Technological development has accelerated the change. Roughly 40% of new devices have a touchscreen, and anyone who has used Windows CE will know that the graphic interface is totally unsuitable for touchscreen technology.
