Nokia Officially Ports Qt to Maemo 5
The Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia has announced an official port of Qt to the Maemo 5 Linux platform.
The Maemo 5 operating system is the basis for Nokia's new N900 Internet tablet. The biggest enhancement over its predecessors is the integrated mobile wireless functionality in addition to WLAN. So far a technology preview of the port is available. The Qt Developer Days in the upcoming weeks should present the occasion of a beta version of the Qt 4.6 port to Maemo, which should give Nokia enough time with its release of Qt 4.6 in the first quarter of 2010.
According to Nokia, the results of the "Qt for Maemo" community projects contributed to the porting endeavor. Nokia is justifying the step from a community-based port to the official Nokia version with its need to implement compliance with upcoming versions of Qt, Maemo, Symbian and other Qt-compatible platforms.
Nokia refers interested developers to the Gitorious repository, and those wanting to examine Qt 4.6 to the Qt website. The technology preview has its own download site.
