ZorinOS 17.1 Released, Includes Improved Windows App Support
If you need or desire to run Windows applications on Linux, there's one distribution intent on making that easier for you and its new release further improves that feature.
ZorinOS is widely respected as an outstanding Linux distribution for new users and, well, just about anyone who wants a beautiful, user-friendly operating system. But the latest release makes a case for those users who want all the benefits of Linux, while also being able to more easily run Windows apps.
Version 17.1 of Zorin OS has been released and not only upgrades Wine to 9.0 but also includes the Bottles utility.
According to the official Zorin OS blog, the team states, "We’ve expanded our built-in database to detect installer files for popular Windows apps and games. It now supports over 100 apps, providing even more tailored recommendations for alternatives to sideloading their Windows executables."
For those who've never heard of Bottles, it's a tool that allows users to run Windows apps within a sandboxed environment and even includes its own built-in app store that installs and pre-configures Windows apps for improved compatibility with the Linux platform.
Of course, this new release isn't just about Windows apps. In fact, along with this latest iteration comes a new flavor… Zorin OS Education, which not only adds the latest improvements to the distribution but also includes plenty of educational software to make learning more fun and impactful.
Also included with 17.1 is the latest version of some of your favorite software titles such as LibreOffice, Firefox, and more. There also is built-in support for Flatpak, AppImage, and Snap apps and even thumbnails for more file formats, such as .exe, .AppImage, RAW, and .epub.
Other changes include a new window placement option (centered or spread), improved security and compatibility, and better hardware support.
You can download an ISO of Zorin OS 17.1 or upgrade your existing installation from the Software Updater.
