  We don't cover a lot of Microsoft technology in this magazine (except in our "Interoperability" and "Living with Windows" issues), but sometimes the moving and shaking of Microsoft really does affect the rest of the high-tech industry. Redmond announced that they were laying off 18,000 people recently; big layoffs are always big news, and Microsoft's bold swipe dominated the high-tech headlines, but another important update from the empire received a lesser share of attention. New Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's manifesto to his employees, dated July 10, 2014, set out a new direction for the company.

  "If you build it, they will come…" The line lingers from a well-known baseball-as-religion movie from many innings in my past. No sense in erecting an elegant synopsis of the film (if I try to build that, you will most certainly go), but I will admit that this one mystical line bears repeating.

  I have put in my time as the news writer for this magazine at various moments over the last 11 years, and one way or another, the European Commission has always been part of the big stories. I don’t even live in Europe, but I’ve penned many stories on the European Commission rulings on privacy, patent reform, and antitrust issues. The European Commission is very interested in high-tech policy; the official website lists topics for “Cybersecurity and Digital Privacy,” “Online Trust,” and “Content and Media” in the highest level of its directory.
