AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 Gives Power Users a Sneak Preview
If you're looking to kick the tires of AlmaLinux's upstream version, the developers have a purrfect solution.
AlmaLinux is typically built from the Red Hat source code and maintains full compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). However, earlier this year Red Hat announced it would discontinue releasing traditional betas of their flagship OS. As a result, the AlmaLinux developers decided to create a new build pipeline and a part of that is AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10.
Kitten 10 is an early release candidate, so it not not fully matured. However, Kitten gives users and/or third-party projects an advanced look into what is happening with the upcoming release of AlmaLinux OS 10. Any project that uses AlmaLinux OS as a base (such as Miracle Linux and Cisco's Unified Communications Manager) can plan accordingly for testing in their own build processes.
Another interesting development is that AlmaLinux has re-enabled support for over 150 devices and frame points that Red Hat dropped for upstream RHEL. The AlmaLinux team has also added Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environments (SPICE) and KVM for IBM Power, as well as continued packaging Firefox and Thunderbird as RPMs (whereas CentOS Stream has switched to Flatpak editions). This makes AlmaLinux an enticing prospect for individuals or companies using older hardware.
Remember, AlmaLinux OS Kitten 10 is a preview release and should not be considered for production systems.
