The powerful Opera GX browser has now come to Linux: Should gamers rejoice, or was this one port we could do without?

Like most Linux Magazine readers, and as the current writer of the FOSSPicks column, I'm a huge advocate of open source software. As Linus's Law states, "Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow," not to mention the fact that a transparent approach to development gives users a much better assurance that an app is only collecting minimal data and there are no coded backdoors.

Nevertheless, there are times when a proprietary program is so useful or entertaining that you can't help but give it a try. Such were my thoughts when I received an announcement from Opera's PR team that its GX browser would be coming to Linux. This gaming-oriented alternative to Opera is developed separately from the main browser and has been available for macOS and Windows since 2019.

Opera GX first caught my attention in 2025 when the developer's X account tweeted [1] that it had freed 18KB of space by removing a picture of a fried egg that had been lurking in the program files. Despite the fact no one seemed to know how the image appeared in the first place and the clear proof that it served no useful purpose, its removal triggered a huge online backlash by Opera GX fans, triggering its prompt restoration the following day.
