The NCWIT.org site provides a Talking Points page as a resource for parents and educators to help encourage girls to consider careers in IT. The page is a great starting point and touches on topics such as what kinds of jobs are available, how to get started, job security and salaries, and how to prepare for a career in IT. However, the link to read more about women in IT provides a rather short list of 22 women and brief descriptions about them. LinuxChix-India, started in 2005 by Archana Raghupathy, got a nice write-up in The Economic Times. The article includes a quote by Vidya Ayer, which illustrates a cultural reason that it's harder for women in India to get involved with computing. Ayer says, "It's the lack of infrastructure, while the lack of computer access also plays some role. Most men who don't own computers would use a friend's machine; women in India would not have the freedom to stay late at a friend's place to hack away."

Barbara Liskov Named MIT Institute Professor

On July 1, Barbara Liskov was named an Institute Professor – the highest faculty rank – at MIT. In 1972, Liskov became the first woman hired as a professor of computer science at MIT. She's also actively worked on improving the hiring process so that more women will be considered for faculty roles, and as an associate head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, she oversaw the hiring of five female faculty members. Stormy Peters Hired as Executive Director of GNOME Foundation

Stormy Peters announced on her OpenLogic blog that she accepted the Executive Director position with the GNOME Foundation. Stormy has a long history with the GNOME community and was one of the founding members of the GNOME Foundation Advisory Board in 2000. On her blog, Stormy says, "I found the GNOME community extremely welcoming and passionate about their project. They got me hooked on open source and I've been spreading the word ever since." Stormy is continuing with OpenLogic in an advisory role.
